Hi, we are in the process of building the new Linux-Lounge web site using Drupal.  Keep your eye on us.  We are on the move.  See the "Gallery" for our progress.

Our Aim

We will take Linux and OS software to the public and expose them to new thinking, experiences and show them that there is a alternative to MS.

The Bus

It's a 1984 MCW Mk11 Metrobus, 9.5m long with a 10.5L 6LXB Gardner engine. From 1984 to 2005 it spent its life in the North East of England finishing up with "Go North East" as a school bus. It was then retired and converted to a mobile casino. In November 2006 we purchased it for a well earned semi retirement in the West Country.

The Project

Westcom and it’s partner in this project Bristol Wireless promote “open source software & technology” To enable us to show business and the general public what open source software is, we proposed to do it using a converted bus. The upper deck would have a LTSP (Linux Terminal Server Project) supporting ten Compaq T20 thin clients’ plus a further 2 positions equipped with shuttle PC’s. We use WiFi, 3G and satellite systems to connect to the internet where we can. Being into amateur radio we would be able to transmit on all amateur bands up to 432MHz. By being browser based we would be able to use the IT suite for many applications.

In November 2006 we started converting the bus to our mobile IT/servary. The casino lecterns had to be removed, modified and reinstalled along with the LTSP T20 thin clients inside them. This along with the re-wiring took nearly a year. Our attention then focused on the lower deck. Once every thing was removed, work could start on installing, a sink, hand basin and prep area were fitted plus display area. At this point the bus was moved to a new site where we started work on removing the windows and fitting a new entrance door to allow a one way system to operate on and off the bus.

Most of the windows were replaced with 18g alloy panals and the dents, plus damaged panels filled or fibre glassed. Then it was time for repainting the out side, this took three weeks. We managed to get a week in the workshop to spray the top coat.

During 2009 we turned our attention to the underside and sorted out the wiring. One of the problems was the inability to stop the engine from the drivers cab. One dead solenoid, and two broken connections were the problem, and we could start and stop her.

Have a look at our Gallery to see photo's of its conversion.
